Road safety concerns in Monmouth are growing, following an incident in Rockfield which prompted residents to suggest the 20mph speed limit doesn’t go far enough.

A concerned member of the public reported a hit and run on Brook Estate where a young person was knocked off their bike.

The driver was reported to be shouting and blaming the young person.

It was reported that a councillor representing Drybridge ward has been pushing for traffic calming measures to be put into place following concerns from a constituent on Brook Estate and residents received questionnaires on this issue.

A councillor was told by higher authority calming measures weren't needed due to the enforcement of the 20mph limit and that the current highways policy is to only implement traffic calming measures in ‘special’ circumstances.

“Please think about those that could be hurt or even killed if you don’t follow the rules of the road. Slower speeds also reduce the noise levels of traffic and make out streets more pleasant to walk and talk in.”

“The speeding on Brook Crescent has been reported to the police, and we will monitor speeds and look at whether any additional signage might help in this location.”
