SIR,

I was irked to read in T he Beacon that Monmouth

Town Council is demanding even more money from the

hard pressed taxpayer in the next financial year.

What a waste of money! The Town Council has no

statutory responsibilities and runs absolutely nothing. It is

exactly on a par with an English Parish Council.

That fact is partly obscured by the decision to allow

former Borough Councils to dub the Chair "Town Mayor"

and utilise the robes and regalia of the defunct Borough

Council.

I totally accept that the Town Council makes

substantial grants to deserving causes, but if I wish to

make a donation to a good cause, I do not need any third

party intervention.

In my opinion the most useful and constructive thing

that the Council could do would be to dissolve itself. I

wonder if anybody out there shares my opinion?
