SIR, On 11th July 2014, Monmouthshire County Council granted Listed Building Consent for work at 13 Monnow Street subject to conditions necessary "to safeguard the character and appearance of the listed building". Is it not ironic that by continuing to allow HGVs to exit St John Street onto Monnow Street, the council itself fails to safeguard the fabric, character and appearance of the listed building? As tenant I can report two significant hits in as many months, the bow window has been badly damaged and on neither occasion did the HGV driver stop voluntarily. The landlord has advised that the much needed repairs will be effected but one wonders how long it will be before further damage is caused to the window which gives the building its listed status.
