Monmouth progressed another round in the Swalec Bowl last Saturday (19th February) when they convincingly defeated mid-Wales side COBRA RFC 19-five, although not without temporary set-backs along the way.
Early and consistent domination up front by Monmouth should have dictated the way they played, but in a frantic first 12 minutes they were drawn into a fast moving, error strewn passing game against a side of lighter, younger players which was a game that was likely to suit the visitors more.
Having got near the visitors' line, fly half Rhys Ricketts was to miss a kick-able penalty but when left wing Tom Baker made deep in-roads into their half again, from the ensuing ruck and a few recyclings of the ball, centre Dewi Lane (pictured) crossed over for the first score of the game with an unconverted try.
A relapse with some missed tackles by both sides compounded by erroneous handling brought little reward for all the effort expended over the next 10 minutes.
Play was not pleasing the referee either as he progressively dished out penalties and rebukes aplenty.
