Despite remedial repairs to potholes on the Wye Bridge, a county councillor is determined to bring the matter up before the MCC cabinet member whose remit is Climate Change and the Environment.

Wyesham councillor Emma Bryn is asking Cabinet member Cllr Catrin Maby for a time-scale on works to improve the bridge.

She told the Beacon that the potholes that were causing so much concern “have been fixed quickly again and so they will soon reappear.

“The road needs rebuilding, which I have been promised is scheduled but feel we need something more concrete. And last time I looked, not all the holes had been filled, the one that fills with water and soaks the pedestrians was still there.”

Comments on social media back up her claims with some saying “It was probably smoother to go over in a horse and cart in 1860 compared to today. Appalling” and “The 1200s wooden bridge lasted until the 1600s seems that was fit for purpose but we can’t resurface a bit of road this day and age, crazy isn’t it”.

She has been chasing this matter since her election in May and will be requesting a timetable for repairs.

Cllr Bryn will be putting the question at the next Monmouthshire County Council meeting scheduled for Jan 19 to Cllr Maby on behalf of residents of Wyesham who “rely heavily on the Wye Bridge in order to access the world beyond, regardless on their mode of travel”.

Her question continues: “Residents have had to face a seriously degraded road surface on the bridge for a prolonged period, with quick fixes lasting little time, the soft tarmac quickly getting thrust onto the pavements causing issues for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers alike.

“I understand works to improve the bridge are underway but we are seeking assurances that improvements will take place in the next financial year, and I am looking to you to give the community some peace of mind by providing us with a time-scale for these works.”
