MADAM,

As a newcomer to the area the debate over whether Monmouth should be Welsh or English has been an interesting history lesson for me.

Unlike my visits to Abergavenny where I hear mostly Welsh accents, I find Monmouth to be very cosmopolitan. During a brief shopping trip to the town one will hear different Welsh dialects as well as Midlands, West Country and classless accents difficult to place.

It is a typical border town and should be accepted for what it is. Would it be too much to expect that it would satisfy everyone if we refer to Monmouth as being Welish? After all, the British are supposed to be good at compromise.
