Residents of Llanvihangel Tor-y-Mynydd gathered on Saturday 14th March to celebrate the continued success of The Star on the Hill, marking a remarkable community effort to bring the much-loved pub back to life.
The evening brought together many of those who had supported the campaign to reopen the pub, highlighting what can be achieved when a community pulls together with determination and pride in its local assets.
Chris Knight paid tribute to the volunteers whose time, energy and commitment made the reopening possible. He also thanked the generous donors who supported refurbishment works, including Devauden Community Council, whose contribution enabled essential equipment to be purchased. While too many individuals were involved to name, the project stands as a powerful example of collective effort for the good of the area.
He also praised landlords Richard and Dee Barker for their dedication, noting their hard work has been central to the success of the reopening. Special recognition was given to Jackie Griffiths, whose coordination and leadership helped bring the project to fruition.
Since reopening in August 2025, The Star has gone from strength to strength, attracting both local residents and visitors and re-establishing itself as a thriving hub at the heart of the community.
County Councillor Rachel Buckler described the achievement as “extraordinary and inspiring”, adding: “It was wonderful to celebrate with local residents. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and it is so lovely to see The Star full of life once again.
“It is a vital connection for the area and a place where friends and neighbours can come together. Rural communities like this are incredibly important, yet it can be easy to feel isolated. Pubs like The Star play a crucial role, and we must do all we can to support them.”
The evening also saw the revival of the much-loved “Songs at the Star” tradition, with fine Welsh voices creating a wonderful sense of occasion. Entertainment was provided by local band The Fabulous Border Brothers, fronted by Hannah and Rob, supported by talented musicians Aled, Phil, Rob, Jade and saxophonist Dan. Their accomplished and uplifting performance brought the celebration to a memorable close.
The event marked not just a reopening, but a renewed sense of community spirit and a bright future for The Star on the Hill.
