A MAN who led an intoxicated teenage woman down an alleyway has been ordered to do community work — and pay the victim compensation.

The 18-year-old female had been out with friends in Swansea city centre and was "very drunk" when she decided to make her way home alone. She was being "guided" down an alley leading from Wind Street to The Strand by 28-year-old Mohammed Rofiq-Ul Alam when two students, who were concerned about what was happening, intervened.

Alam had previously pleaded guilty to common assault when he appeared at Swansea Magistrates Court for sentencing.

At the earlier hearing Andrew Smith, for the prosecution, said the complainant only had a vague recollection of what happened after she left Jack Murphy's bar in search of a taxi.

He said: "A man approached her, saying something to the effect that she should go with him — he took hold of her left arm, and she was then guided towards an alleyway that runs down to The Strand.

"She remembers two young men coming down the alleyway — the next thing she remembers was walking towards Wind Street where she saw two police officers in uniform."

Alam had initially blocked the woman from leaving with the university students but then allowed her to go. During his previous hearing the court had been told Alam's only motivation during the November 13 incident was to help the woman find a taxi.

His solicitor, Steve Harrett, said Alam — formerly of Drybridge Street, Monmouth, but now of Victoria Terrace, Newbridge — had lost his job as an Indian restaurant manager since the case but was hoping to find new employment in the same line of work in the Newport area.

Magistrates ordered Alam to do 200 hours of community work and pay his victim £250 compensation. He must also pay £250 in costs, and a £60 surcharge.

Jan Langton, chairwoman of the bench, said: "She was a vulnerable person and I am sure she has been traumatised by what happened that night, even though she was intoxicated."

She also praised the actions of the students who had gone to the woman's aid.
