MADAM,

Monmouth Civic Society meets tonight (Wednesday) at the Shire Hall at 7pm. The meeting is open to all, so if you have something you would like to talk about or action you want taken, you are warmly invited to attend.

Since its last meeting, the society has kept up the pressure on the county council over the flooding on the Wye Bridge before Christmas (which saw schoolchildren having to walk along the parapet to keep dry). It has also been pressing the county to remove or replace the many dysfunctional roadsigns around the town.

The society has been trying to stop school coaches parking all day in the bays in Blestium Street. Tourist coaches are avoiding the town because they have nowhere to stop. Visitor numbers at the museum and Shire Hall have been badly affected.

It is hoped the meeting will also decide on a memorial to Keith Kissack. One suggestion is to revive the tradition of roses along the railings of St Mary’s parish church in his memory.

The slow roll-out in Monmouth of the county’s new policy on A-boards may also be discussed.

Charles Boase
