A MONMOUTH woman is aiming to walk 1,000 miles to raise money for a community hall.

Jane Stone is hoping to raise £1,000 to go towards refurbishing St Thomas’ Hall in Overmonnow.

Mrs Stone decided to take up the challenge after her friend spotted it in a walking magazine.

She said: “A friend takes a magazine called Country Walking and they have a challenge to walk 1,000 miles in a year and I thought that much effort could be put to a good purpose.

“I started in mid-January and have walked 115 miles so far. They say as long as you do an average of three miles a day it is possible. It has made me walk a bit more but I do meet up with Janet (friend) and do long walks.”

As a church warden at St Thomas’ this challenge was just another way to support the fundraising for the building.

Mrs Stone said: “We are hoping to get sponsors from all and sundry because we need all the help we can get.”

The funds raised will help the hall complete a redevelopment project which was started last year.

The redevelopment, which saw the rear of the building replaced, will provide for a larger main hall, meeting rooms, new kitchen, toilets and other facilities.

These will facilitate activities including a lunch club, advice, job club, and other services to reduce social isolation, tackle poverty and bring the community together.
