CALDICOT Male Voice Choir performed to an audience of 500 people last Saturday (6th September). The choir took to the stage at Caldicot Leisure Centre and were joined by the Mabe Ladies Choir and Rebecca John from the BBC's Wales Today programme who compèred the evening. The Choir toured Cornwall last year and shared the stage at Truro with the Mabe and were delighted to invite the choir to sing with them again at the Gala Concert a year later. The programme had a wide ranging appeal, and two new pieces were premiered by Caldicot: Nirvana arranged by Stephen Berry and On the Street Where You Live. Featuring 12 items in all, from the spiritual Ride the Chariot featuring soloist Siân Hattton and David Gould, through Llef, Rachie and the haunting Dafydd y Garreg Wen to foot tapping The Rhythm of Life and the soft hymn He. The choir and its musical team of Siân Hattton, Shirley Anne James, John Nicholson and Stephen Berry produced a wide range of male voice choral music to suit all tastes in a performance that can only enhance the standing of Caldicot Male Voice Choir as arguably one of the leading choirs in Wales. In a contrasting choral style which wonderfully complemented Caldicot's, the award winning Mabe Ladies Choir led by Amanda Ward and accompanied by the talented Rico Gerber, also produced a mix of styles, from opening with Bright Morning Stars to finalising with the humorous Groucho Marx song Lydia, the tattooed lady. The audience was treated to the beautiful Korean song, Ahrirang with accompanying percussion, In Praise of Cornwall and the technically demanding and fast moving J'entends le Moulin (I hear the Windmill). Following the interval the Mabe's programme included One Voice, Here comes the Sun, The Wayfaring Stranger and Can You Feel the Love Tonight. The concert closed with both national anthems. Everyone in the audience was thrilled that the Mabe Ladies Choir paid Wales a fabulous tribute by learning Mae Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau. Further, knowing that Caldicot Choir's chosen charity for this year is Prostate Cymru, the choir was pleased to present a cheque for £160 as a result of their own fundraising efforts
