CHEPSTOW has been revealed as one of ten towns in Wales where motorists are most likely to receive a parking fine, according to figures released yesterday (5th December).
A Freedom of Information (FOI) request by comparethemarket.com has discovered that Monmouthshire is ranked seventh in the top ten worst offenders in Wales, with 774 tickets issued between July and September, amounting to £16,180 in fines. The worst car park in the county was Chepstow’s Nelson Street Car Park, with 106 tickets.
The comparison site looked at the number of fines issued, the revenue generated, and the most popular street or car park where fines are issued. Data was compiled based on 265 responses.
Paying on average up to £70 per ticket, nearly 13,000 tickets have been issued in the last three months across the top ten fining councils. The top fining area in Wales, Conwy issued a total of 6,770 Penalty Charge Notices (PCN) and accumulated a revenue of over £166,322 in the last three months alone.
Simon McCulloch, director at comparethemarket.com said: “Our parking fines hotspots have revealed that motorists need to be extra vigilant when it comes to something as simple as parking their vehicle correctly if they want to avoid a hefty fine. With Christmas on the horizon, £70 would go further for a gift for a loved one than it would in a parking ticket!
“If you do find yourself with a PCN, it’s worth checking your ticket, as you can often reduce the fee by half, simply by paying it within 7 or 14 days, depending on your local council.”
