SIR,

I wish to congratulate Monmouth Rugby Club for raising such a splendid sum for the Army Benevolent Fund in memory of Jamie Gunn, a Rifleman in the 2nd Battalion The Rifles, based in Chepstow, who was killed in Afghanistan.

Readers may be interested to know that the Rifles have their own charity, Care for Casualties, for those that have returned from operations in Afghanistan seriously injured.

One of the predecessors of the Rifles is the Rifle Brigade (RB) and a book has been produced, titled 'Alan Maier's War (Letters Home 1941-45)'.

Alan was a subaltern in the RB and the letters have been edited by John Bendit, who was also a subaltern in the RB during almost the same period.

All profits from the book goes to Care for Casualties and John said that he has already raised over £6,000 so far.

I recommend this very interesting book, which costs £12.99 and is obtainable from AJM Books, c/o John Bendit, 5 Goodacres, Arundal Road, Fontwell, West Sussex, BN18 0SF.

Cheques should be made out to AJM Books.

In the RB, the term  Rifleman includes all ranks and the old saying is "Once a Rifleman, always a Rifleman".

I understand that the Rifles still keep to this tradition.
