The Welsh Government Minister for Education has announced that the current school banding model for comprehensive in Wales is to be extended to primary schools. Huw Lewis AM, has also decided to conduct a review of the controversial system. "The measures included in the current secondary school banding model are being reviewed to ensure that the model continues to align with our priorities for education in Wales, in particular with a focus on reducing the impact of deprivation on attainment," he said. "A primary school grading model is also being developed to help us better identify schools most in need of support. It will give parents across Wales a clear picture of how schools are performing. In Monmouthshire, both the review of secondary school banding and the development of a primary school grading model will be considered by the Education Achievement Service (EAS), based in Newport. The banding system in South East Wales has received criticism in the past, often described as confusing by those who use it. Officials insist that the banding results are not a form of league table. The bands range from 1-5, 5 being the worst. In the last results, released in January, Caldicot Comprehensive School was listed in Band 2, Chepstow Comprehensive School in Band 3 and Monmouth Comprehensive School in Band 4. A revised secondary school banding model and a new primary school grading model will be introduced this autumn.
