CBBC and Blue Peter presenters joined forces to compete in the second annual Brockweir Soapbox Derby, ‘Brake for the Border’.
Soapboxes of all shapes and sizes took part in the downhill timed race at Brockweir with the television cameras adding to the spectacle of the occasion.
Manoeuvring chicanes and jumps down Mill Hill, this year had a new category for the juniors, after all, why should the adults get to have all the fun!
With 100 volunteers marshalling the event, the day took on a fun-day atmosphere with trade stalls and local producers selling food and drink made within a few miles of the
village.
Youngsters were treated to a view of their CBBC heroes, Sam and Mark from the Big Friday Wind-up Pranks programme who were joined by Karim Zeroual, notable for his role as Sadiq in the CBBC fantasy television series The Sparticle Mystery and Lindsay Russell from Blue Peter to compete in the downhill race along with competitors from Brockweir, Monmouth and others from as far away as Leicestershire and Dorset.
With the senior and junior races competing for the honours of overall winner and the best in show, it was not all about speed as creativity was paramount in getting your soapbox noticed! With scaled models of Landrovers and Star Wars’ TIE fighters competing with Jaws and the Mutts Nuts, the Mill Hill saw it all.
