On Sunday evening, October 26, Spirits runner Vicky Roberts organised a group run for ladies to promote safer running for women. This is a campaign run by South Wales Police and Welsh athletics and encouraged women to get together and ‘Own the night’. It seeks to unite runners, clubs, and the public by encouraging community support and "calling out bad behaviour".
The key aims of the ' Own The Night' campaign were: Raise awareness of women’s safety concerns when running at night or early mornings.
Empower women to continue running through the winter months with confidence and educate running communities and the wider public on allyship and practical ways to support women.
The campaign highlights that a significant majority of women have experienced public sexual harassment while running, and it aims to make running a more enjoyable experience for everyone, regardless of the time of day.
11 members attended the session and all discussed ways they can keep safe and what they can do to keep themselves running safely and confidently during the dark winter months. The evening ended with more information sharing and a warm cup of hot chocolate.
