MONMOUTH residents have expressed their concern about the state of the much-used underpass under the A40 dual carriageway.

Labour County Council candidate Catherine Fookes met with residents from Wyesham last week who expressed concern about the state of the underpass under the A40, which they and countless other residents regularly use.

Peter Holmes Chair of the Residents Association at Riverside Park, Wyesham, said: “This is one of the first impressions visitors get when they visit our town and the state of the underpass really is disgusting.”

Catherine Fookes added: “It’s time the town council did something about the underpass. It’s a total eyesore and if elected as county councillor for Wyesham, I will work with the community to seek funding to improve it. For example we could invite Kymin View School to paint murals. And it must be kept clean and tidy so that walking in our town doesn’t feel so unwelcoming.”

Lesley Daniels, also of Riverside Park said: “I’m shocked at the deterioration of the underpass and shocked too that no one has done anything about it despite me raising this. It doesn’t give a good impression of our town.”
