Young Ross driver James Sibbet continued his strong challenge in his first season racing cars with a superb win at the Cadwell Park circuit. The British Automobile Racing Club meeting at the Lincolnshire circuit was headlined by the latest round of the Caterham Graduate Championship, and the crowds enjoying a gloriously sunny day's racing were certainly not disappointed by the action on the track! Although this was James's first visit to Cadwell Park as a driver, he was able to set some strong times in qualifying to earn himself third place on the grid of 26 Super-Graduate Caterham drivers. The cars have evolved from the famous Colin Chapman- designed Lotus 7 of the 1960s, the modified engines producing 130 bhp. Coupled with a race- tuned chassis weighing less than an old Mini, these Caterhams deliver stunning performance and exciting racing with lots of slipstreaming and overtaking. A delayed start due to oil dropped along a large stretch of the circuit by touring cars in the previous race tested the nerve of the Caterham drivers as they finally lined up for the start. As the lights changed James made a cautious start, wary of the oil on the track, and fell back to fifth as the charging pack took the left hand bend and climb up to Coppice. A determined piece of late braking saw him move back up to fourth at the end of Park Straight, followed by a cut inside at Mansfield to regain third place, challenging Andrew Vickers for second by the end of the first lap. Current championship leader Vickers was clearly going to use all his experience to remain ahead of James, and the next six laps saw these two duelling for the second podium spot, just clear of a following group of half a dozen drivers. In the meantime the race leader, Andrew Ennis, was able to pull a growing gap over the following pair as they slowed each other up. An announcement on lap three that Ennis, lying second in the championship, had been awarded a ten-second penalty for jumping the start added a new dimension to the race! It was beginning to look as though Vickers was going to be able to cover the racing line around the relatively narrow circuit to frustrate his young challenger, but on lap six he made a small error coming over the crest at the famous Mountain, leaving a car's width to his right. Too late he saw James diving alongside, and his desperate move to cover the line saw the two drivers make contact. Vickers took a detour over the grass and dropping back to seventh place. With the gap between himself and leader Ennis at about eleven seconds, James was now able to set off on a charge whilst the pack behind fought over third. At the chequered flag the gap was down to eight seconds, and with the penalty against the unfortunate Ennis, James was awarded this, his second win of the season and sixth visit to the podium. His victory at Cadwell Park sees James move up to third in the championship table, a remarkable achievement in his first season racing Caterhams. On Sunday, September 23rd the drivers will be at Mallory Park in Leicestershire, before the final two rounds of the season at the Grand Prix circuit of Spa in October. James, 19, who works for Dawleys in Ross, is looking forward to the visit to the Belgian circuit. "I obviously hope I can maintain my challenge in the championship, but whatever the result it's going to be amazing driving the same circuit as the F1 drivers – I can't wait!" he said.
