A plan for an independent premium 60 bedroom hotel exclusively for adults, with a state-of the-art destination spa within landscaped grounds, is being proposed for Monmouth by Alchemy Hospitality Management Ltd.
The proposed development would transform the 11-acre disused manufacturing site, on the banks of the River Wye on Hadnock Road in Monmouth, and provide a unique and prestigious visitor destination for Wales.
The brownfield site owned by Crossdean Ltd, was used for the manufacture and storage of packaging materials for over 20 years until its closure in 2007. Since then, the site has been largely in decline.
The hotel would also bring a significant economic boost to Monmouthshire and the surrounding counties. The inclusion of the extensive destination spa also provides a significant opportunity for a thriving year round visitor economy.
Jan Kitcher, Managing Director of Alchemy Hospitality Management Ltd said: “We have been really encouraged by the support we have received so far. Since the start of our community consultation in February, many people have been telling us how positive this could be for the area, especially as there is currently a lack of quality hotel accommodation in Monmouth. Our plans would also help meet the Welsh Government’s requirement for the development of innovative, premium hotels and well-being facilities and spas”.
“Our plans for the hotel and spa would include a range of on-site active leisure and spa and relaxation experiences for hotel residents, day spa guests and spa and wellness members. It would also utilise the fantastic leisure, cultural, heritage and entertainment options and attractions in Monmouthshire and the surrounding counties. In addition to the hotel and spa, the development could also include a multi practice wellness clinic and a cookery school with private dining rooms.”
As an independent hotel, the proposal would benefit local people and the local economy, generating the full time equivalent of 160 jobs. On top of this, the hotel would look to generate partnerships with local active leisure, cultural and heritage providers, as well as local businesses, particularly in sourcing the very best in local food and other local products and services.
As part of the planning process, the development team, have been consulting with the community since February, when a Public Exhibition on the proposed development was held at Shire Hall in Monmouth. Over 230 people attended and the response, on the whole, was very positive.
An update information drop-in is planned at the Shire Hall in the Autumn, so that feedback can be taken into consideration before the application is submitted. More details of the proposal can be found on the project website www.hotelandspaonthewye.org
