SIR, I am extremely annoyed at the problem I encountered with the bus service 65 Chepstow to Monmouth via Trellech that I encountered on Wednesday 1st October. The problem I describe is simply unacceptable. I arrived at Chepstow at approximately 4pm having journeyed up from Penzance by train. I waited in Chepstow for the last bus of the day from Chepstow to Monmouth via Trellech, and intended to travel to Trellech. I would point out here that the timetable I downloaded from the Monmouthshire County Council (MCC) website gave the time of the last bus as 5.15pm whereas when I got to the bus station the timetable there gave the time as 5.30pm. I arrived at the bus station at 5pm and waited and waited. At 6pm no bus had arrived. There is nowhere in the bus station giving a contact number you can ring to find out why buses have not arrived - this is not good enough. After all this service is, I believe, operated by MCC itself. Eventually I decided that the only thing I could do was to catch the last bus to Tintern on bus service 69 at 6.10pm and walk the long distance from there to Trellech in the semi darkness. When I got to Tintern I got off the bus at the Royal George Hotel and walked up the Trellech road. I then found that the road was closed to both cars and pedestrians and the only way I could proceed was to climb over fences at either side of the roadworks and over the roadworks itself, all this with a suitcase, and I am a pensioner. It took me one hour 10 minutes to walk up to Trellech in the dangerous conditions of semi-darkness on narrow rural roads. It took me six hours to travel the 200 miles to Chepstow from Penzance on the train and then nearly four hours to travel the last eight miles from Chepstow to Trellech. I hope I will never have to repeat this awful experience again. I have emailed MCC about this a week ago and have received no reply or explanation whatsoever. Mike Mason (Trellech)
