A NUMBER of blocked drains are to be cleared in Monmouth in an attempt to alleviate some of the flooding problems.
Monmouth Town Councillor Mrs Sue Chivers took Mr Martin E vans of Monmouthshire County Council's Land Drainage Department, on a tour of some of the town's flooding trouble spots.
They visited Wonastow Road, the entrance to the old Tillotson's factory and Rockfield Road.
Mrs Chivers said they discovered drains were blocked with mud and in one case a drain had completely collapsed and was blocked with bricks and stones.
The flooding problems were exacerbated by a gate dumped next to one of the tunnels on the brook at Wonastow Road which collected rubbish and blocked the outlet.
Mr Evans promised to free the blocked drains and tunnels and said that the whole area needed a survey. He said the drains were probably not large enough to cope with recent climate changes.
After the meeting Mrs Chivers said: "I feel more positive. Clearing the drains isn't going to solve the problem but at least the water will be free to flow more easily. Mr Evans was very co-operative."
