SIR, While recent letters about our move to Pen Y Pound stadium have merit they would have carried more weight if they were from paying members and supporters of the club. I am however disappointed that people can't celebrate and be proud of our achievements in recent years in rising six divisions to win the Welsh League title, three divisional titles in four years which is unprecedented and be currently ranked in the top 10 football clubs in south Wales including Cardiff City, Swansea and Newport County. We've also been named Gwent Community club of the year for 2014 and are being considered for Welsh Club of the Year, have 300 players across all age groups, a Welsh Premier League academy, a sliver award winning junior section, the largest youth football festival in south Wales and more than 40 volunteers putting in in excess of 10,000 voluntary hours each year. If anyone in Monmouth cares to drop by Chippie every Saturday they will see hundreds of little Kingfishers going through their paces and pretty much every Sunday another 10 games taking place throughout the day, so any talk of not developing local players is plainly nonsense. As a club our aim is to be excellent and we try to cater for young players of all abilities but importantly at our top end we want to keep our best players as in the past they would have to go and play for other clubs or stagnate. Our journey over the past 10 years has allowed people in Monmouth to enjoy the talents of Dan MacDonald, Nick Harrhy, the Palmer and Ford brothers, Smudger and Azzy in their prime. In the future we can keep our better players as they emerge from our youth and junior ranks. There is plenty of recreational and county level provision at other clubs in and around the town for people to watch and play, and maybe next year we can develop that in Monmouth if we get people to run it. For now, this Saturday we play our first game as Welsh League Champions at Pen Y Pound against the 2nd division champions Cardiff Met University (kick off 2.30pm). We are aiming to be promoted to the Welsh Premier League and in the next five years to qualify for European competition. Our new home gives us the chance to do that. We think that's something to be proud of and if people back us with support or sponsorship we have shown it is achievable. See you Saturday – it's only £4 to get in and kids come free. Lee Robson (Chairman, Monmouth Town FC)
