SIR, Monmouth is a town between two rivers, it is essential that children learn to swim and develop their skills in water. The proposed plans for a new Comprehensive School are on display on the first floor of Shire Hall. Three options are proposed, one raising serious doubts regarding the future of the swimming pool. Option 1: The school building will be built alongside the present coach drop off area, with the pool and leisure centre retained. Option 2: The new build will require demolition of the old 'William Jones' building and the swimming pool. The suggestion of a new pool to be built to the side of the leisure centre, is doubtful because of the question of cost is stated in the list of weaknesses. Option 3: Keeps the swimming pool and leisure centre but requires the demolition of the present school buildings, to rebuild over the site. This option is highly unlikely because the bulk of the school would be in temporary accommodation, with the likelihood of a drop in educational attainment during the construction period. The chosen plans for the new school are likely to go to planning in August. It is essential that the community are aware of the threat to the swimming pool and make their comments online and inform their elected County Councillors. E Dean (Monmouth)
