SALLY Asp recently flew from Melbourne in Australia to join the Cheptsow Lions Club in a sponsored walk in memory of her cousin Kath Gibby.
Sally's early years were spent around Magor before emigrating to Australia over fifty years ago. Joining her on the walk was her husband Gary.
When the wife of the Chepstow and Caldicot Lions President, Nigel Gibby, recently died, Club members decided to undertake a Sponsored Walk in Kath's memory.
The 'Kath Gibby' Memorial Coastal Path Walk was undertaken last Saturday by several Gibby family members along with Lions' members, their partners, friends and other supporters.
Some of those walking did so in fancy dress, gaining special notice from spectators following the soccer match at Thornwell Football Club, where the coastal path passes a few feet from the club house.
Seeing them off on the walk was Mayor of Chepstow, Cllr Stephanie Dovey, and her husband Cllr David Dovey, Chairman of Monmouthshire County Council.
The walk started at 2pm from the Bandstand on the Wye River Bank, Chepstow, and the last stragglers got to the Black Rock picnic site, Portskewett. some time after 5pm.
The walk is thought to have been around 6.5 miles long.
Shortly after the finish Lions President Nigel Gibby presented the prize for the best 'Fancy Dress' to walker Mark Morelli. Memorial Certificates were also presented to all the participants.
The walk raised over £1,000 for the Chepstow Lions' Charity Fund.
Sally Asp said she found the walk a great way to remember her cousin, and remarked on the many good causes that she'd heard Chepstow Lions were involved with.
She further recalled how her cousin, Kath, had always been a champion for those less fortunate than herself, and of how this walk was a great way to remember Kath Gibby and all she stood for.
Kath Gibby, a retired nurse, was a keen supporter of the local Lions Club and of the many local organisations the Lions help.
Possibly influenced by a career in nursing Kath always particularly favoured the work done at Chepstow Hospital: this included supporting the Chepstow Stroke Group, at Christmas providing patients with gifts, and donating much needed equipment to the hospital.
