A FIRE that broke out in Caldicot School last Saturday morning (26th April) is being treated as 'suspicious' by Gwent Police. It is thought the fire was started by intruders breaking a window to enter the building who then set fire to the blinds. Emergency services were alerted by Caldicot Leisure Centre to the fire at 8.20am. The fire was contained to the first floor and was extinguished by the fire service but, if left unnoticed, the fire reportedly had the potential to cause millions of pounds worth of damage. The fire comes only two years after Thornwell School fell victim to arson. A spokesperson for Gwent Police, said: "Gwent Police and colleagues from the fire service were called at approximately 8.20am on Saturday 26th April to reports of a fire at Caldicot Comprehensive School. "The fire service quickly extinguished the fire before any major damage could be caused. "Officers are treating the fire as suspicious and are investigating the cause. "They are urging anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious activity around the school or has any information about the incident to contact Gwent Police on 101 quoting log 106 26/04/14." A spokesperson from Monmouthshire County Council (MCC) said: "Caldicot School opened to all pupils as normal last Monday (28th April). "Thanks to prompt action by leisure centre staff and the emergency services the fire was contained and caused only minor damage. "We understand that arson is suspected and we hope those behind it are caught as soon as possible. "Any attempt to disrupt the education of our young people is to be deplored." As the Beacon went to press, no arrests had been made.
