MADAM,

On a recent visit to my old home town I noted with great approval the ‘pinch-point’ innovation at the top of Monnow Street.

Always having been an avid Beacon reader I then picked up on Angela Hoyle’s letter published last week and wholly agreed with her sentiments about Monmothians’ ability to give-and-take. I always considered when I lived here that there were many closet socialists in the town who would support such an obvious manifestation of Aneurin Bevan’s famous dictum, “from each, according to their worth, to each, according to their need”.

She is right to highlight the problems with daytime deliveries and not just those turning right out of St Johns Street. I observed some quite lengthy delays owing to private refuse collections near the pinch-point, this resulted in an elderly ‘volunteer traffic warden’ attempting to direct cars around the obstacle!

However, having been raised in Osbaston, I failed to understand Angela’s observations concerning residents of that area. Those wishing to return to Osbaston form the Glendower Street area would be always more inclined to progress through St Mary’s Square to the Monk Street Lights, rather than using St John’s Street.

Being a cyclist, and currently residing in the London borough of Hackney, I consider myself to be something of an expert on traffic management systems, I have to applaud the Monmouthshire planners for this exciting initiative which has recreated the traffic flow arrangements on the old Monnow Bridge.
