IT IS only weeks since the Woodland Trust launched their appeal to help them purchase and protect the long term future of Beaulieu Wood but already £7,500 has been promised by many individuals towards the project.

Dominating the skyline of Monmouth, sitting on top of The Kymin, Beaulieu Wood was once a continuous blanket of ancient woodland. Now, like so much of the country's pitiful stock of remaining ancient woodland, areas of the Wye Valley have been spoiled by commercial conifer planting.

The local appeal for Beaulieu Wood is asking members of the public to help change this. If the Woodland Trust are to succeed in their project to buy the wood, £10,000 needs to be raised.

Laura Judson from the Woodland Trust said: "We have got off to a flying start with donations from many people and already have promises totalling £7,500. We need as many people to get involved as possible. Any amount of donation can really help and could make all the difference towards the target."

Laura confirmed that if the Trust were able to buy the site they would continue with the broad-leaved tree restoration programme.

"This is important as there has only been a conifer canopy for around 40 years and critical changes in the seed bank viability can take place after around 50 years of dense shade. Carrying out the restoration work is vital if the potential to restore this dormant ancient woodland habitat is to be fulfilled. Your support can help us restore Beaulieu Wood to its former glory."

The appeal is asking local people to promise or pledge money towards the target. Local businesses, authorities and charitable trusts are also being asked for their support. Only when the target has been reached will the Trust ask for the promised donations to be honoured.

Anyone wishing to make a pledge should contact Laura Judson on 01455 271718 or collect a pledge form directly from the Museum, Library or other outlets in Monmouth.
