The Royal British Sea Angling Club, Monmouth, finally managed to get back to sea after having ten trips cancelled one after the other due to severe weather.
Last year the club did not manage once to go on the boat to the Channel Isles and the start of the new season did not start much better with the first two trips being cancelled.
Alan Cox, the booking secretary, said "It was terrible last year, we were stuck with the mini bus, so when the trips did not take place, all we could do was to go to the beach and pier fishing, to finance it.
"But we got there in the end and it was an excellent start. We caught enough cod to compensate for the whole of last year".
He said, with the forecast not good, they were only able to go out 36 miles. "But between six anglers we managed to catch half a ton of of prime cod, ranging from 10 to 15lbs in weight".
The next trip is on Saturday, July 18, on a first come, first served basis. Anyone interested in attending should call Alan on 077886144772.
