MONMOUTH AM David Davies in his plenary speech on the Local Government Finance Settlement described the amounts allocated to rural local authorities as "outrageous."

The 2001-02 Settlement has been debated in the Chamber and because of the support of Labour and Liberal AMs was passed which will result in yet another large increase in Monmouthshire Council taxes.

Speaking afterwards, Mr Davies said: "This settlement is an unmitigated disaster for the people of Monmouth. Once again Labour and the duplicitous Liberals have sold us down the river.

"For a second year the Assembly, which we in Monmouthshire did not want, expects the taxpayers of the county to bail out the inefficiencies of Labour's rotten boroughs in the South Wales Valleys.

"As for how much our taxes are to go up by, who knows? The Assembly neglected to set out clearly the amounts to be given to each authority as has happened previously. I fear this spells out yet another double figure percentage increase for Monmouth."
