It might look like the Federation Administrator for Kymin View Primary School and Llandogo Primary School, Mrs Williams, is celebrating victory in the Welsh Grand National. However, the image was actually created using AI as part of Internet Safety Day activities across both schools.
Pupils from Kymin View and Llandogo Primary Schools took part in a range of creative activities designed to develop digital skills, increase awareness of the risks associated with new technology, and learn how to stay safe online.
Year 6 pupils produced a number of AI generated images of school staff. The aim was to observe how realistic AI generated images are, prompting consideration about the reliability of online information, and introducing the importance of consent. As well as producing a picture of
Mrs Williams’ Grand National victory, they also generated an image of Man United fan Mrs Swann in a Man City kit.
Pupils reviewed their experiences. “I thought AI was just a bit of a laugh” said one, but the class agreed that “it’s hard to trust anything when I’m on a phone”. The importance of staying safe online was a key message, with pupils reflecting: “Now I know what to do.”
Meanwhile pupils in reception and year 1 found out about voice assist. They learnt about some of the useful tasks it can help with, and worked out that it is not a person speaking. “I found out that voice assist can tell jokes and play songs” reported one pupil “but I also found out that it has no feelings.”
The staff at Llandogo and Kymin View primaries are invested in giving pupils the digital skills they will need for the future, as well as nurturing an understanding of how to manage risks online.
