The most recent serious accident at Highbeech roundabout is but one of a number of traffic incidents in the vicinity of the notorious bottleneck junction. As such, it is a further testament to the necessity for the proper improvement of the highway access and roundabout design, signage and lane markings control, which currently contributes to driver confusion, frustration, and consequently inconsiderate, careless and dangerous driving practices.
Furthermore, the location of the 40mph speed sign immediately prior to the roundabout approach is clearly inappropriate, contra-common sense, potentially hazardous and indeed of questionable legality? Positioned as it is a short distance on the A466 following the customary police 30mph police speed trap van, it is surely the ultimate ironical and perverse juxtaposition - and one may surmise, contrary to RoSPA safety audit guidelines.
It is obviously evident that personal road safety issues are yet another serious concern to be added to the adverse roundabout traffic congestion problems with the associated delays, stresses, costs and air pollution hazards.
Clearly, urgent effective action by the responsible highway authorities is imperative to remedy the situation, before another serious or indeed fatal road injury occurs.
