Linking past, present and hopefully the future, members of the Practical Gardening Group of the Monmouth U3A are hard at work trying to restore the Nelson Garden to its former glory. This late 18th century garden, in the centre of the town of Monmouth, was reputedly once visited by Admiral Lord Nelson and Lady Emma Hamilton, in 1802. Many historical events have taken place within this delightful enclosed garden, but of late it has become sadly neglected. However, the U3A Garden Group is hoping to bring new life to the garden, by becoming involved in its regeneration and maintenance. They have been given support in this practical environmental project by Morrisons Supermarkets CSV, Community Service Volunteers Action Earth 2008 campaign. A grant for £50 has been donated by Morrisons to cover the cost of tools and plants. Help has also been given by Handyman House DIY store in Monmouth in supporting the restoration of the garden. Volunteers for assistance and donations are still urgently required for this ongoing project, so any offers of support will be gratefully received and can be made by contacting The Nelson Museum, Monmouth.
