A TWO vehicle crash near Raglan has prompted calls for a review of the layout of the A40 and Old Monmouth Road Junction.

At approximately 4.25pm on Sunday (13th November) officers from Gwent Police were called to reports of a two vehicle crash on the A40 near Raglan.

There were no life threatening injuries, but three people were taken to Nevill Hall Hospital for condition checks.

The crash has resulted in Monmouth AM Nick Ramsay calling on the Welsh Government to review the safety of the A40 and Old Monmouth Road junction.

He said: “I have been calling for the A40 and Old Monmouth Road junction to be reconfigured for many years.

“The most recent accident highlights the serious problems with the current layout of the road.

“In the past the Welsh Government have rejected a variety of redesign options including partially closing the junction and the introduction of a roundabout because of proximity to the junction of the A40 with the A449.

“This junction dates from the time when this stretch of road was originally constructed as the Raglan bypass.

“It is only going to get busier particularly with the improvements to the Heads of the Valleys A465.

“One thing is clear, the status quo is not an option. I am calling on the Welsh Government to urgently review this junction and to put forward plans for improvement before there are any more serious accidents."
