SIR,

I want to thank the townspeople of Monmouth from the bottom of my heart for the honour they paid to my son, Rifleman Jamie Gunn, who was killed in action in Afghanistan on February 25th, 2009, and whose funeral took place on March 18th.

He was a soldier, but he was also my precious son and a friend to many of you.

To see the town turn out for him in the way it did, and to read the cards and letters from so many people, has given great strength to me and my family.

I have never before been so touched by the kindness of strangers and friends. I know Jamie would have been immensely moved and proud.

Thank you once again.

Janet Gunn

(Monmouth)
