SIR, With more Monmouth residents and visitors than ever before it would seem a good idea to purchase the meadow across the River Monnow behind the Co-operative Food outlet and convert it to a car park with a pedestrian bridge connecting it to the town's shops. Vehicular access would not be an insurmountable problem nor would the fact that the field has been known to flood. Such an occurrence is extremely rare and could be mitigated by modest defenses or by closing the facility if waters did rise. Monnow Street congestion would be alleviated at a stroke, with such a proposal not costing the earth to implement. Paul Groves (Monmouth)
