On Sunday (16th July) the ambulance service was called out three times in the space of three hours to three separate collisions involving motorcycles near Raglan, one of which was on the A40.
The air ambulance was first called at around 11.25am on Sunday after a motorcyclist collided with the central reservation on the slip road between the A40 eastbound and the A449.
The motorcyclist, a 35-year-old man, was airlifted to Southmead Hospital in Bristol with injuries which are not thought to be life-threatening.
Not long after, at approximately 11.40am an ambulance was called to reports of a road traffic collision involving a motorbike on the Old Monmouth Road near Skew Bridge. A motorcyclist, a 53-year-old man came off his bike and was taken to Nevill Hall hospital in Abergavenny by ambulance. His injuries are not thought to be life threatening or life changing.
An emergency crew was then called into action for a third time at 1.50pm to reports of a road traffic collision involving a motorbike on a B road running adjacent to the A40 near Raglan Castle. A spokesperson for the air ambulance said a crew were sent in an ambulance and a woman was also taken to Nevill Hall hospital.
The latest incidents come after a review into the junction by the Welsh Government failed to recommend any improvements, according to Monmouth Assembly Member Nick Ramsay.
“In my view this is a very dangerous junction, which has been the scene of a number of serious accidents over the years. Local people say they have witnessed many near misses at this interchange,” he said.
“I am disappointed that the last Welsh Government review failed to recommend any improvements.
“I will be urging officials to reassess the junction as part of the next formal review.”
The junction has been subject to numerous calls to improve the safety of the road, and a petition launched in June after a collision left drivers of the two vehicles in hospital gathered more than 600 signatures.
Currently, vehicles leaving Raglan wishing to travel on the A40 towards Monmouth or Newport are forced to cross the busy road at the A40 and Old Monmouth Road junction. It is here where a number of recent incidents have taken place.
A variety of redesign options including partially closing the junction and the introduction of a roundabout have previously been rejected by the Welsh Government.
