A GAS explosion that could be heard from Wyesham was caused by an electrical fault.
The explosion, which occurred on Chippenhamgate Street opposite the police station, left a hole in the ground and a number of displaced bricks. The area was cordoned off soon after and fire crews were in attendance.
A spokesperson from South Wales Fire and Rescue said: “A manhole exploded following an electrical fault outside Monmouth Police Station at 9.33pm
“Crews attended using detection equipment.”
There were also numerous power cuts which affected properties and the ongoing Monmouth Festival until power was restored. It is not currently known whether there is a direct link between the explosion and the power outages.
