A SECOND attack in 12 months on the cricket covers in Monmouth was discovered last week.
Groundsman Gordon Grey discovered the damage to the covers last Tuesday (10th May), a year after the equipment was vandalised last May costing £4,500.
Twelve months ago the steel frame of the mobile cricket covers was crushed causing several thousand pounds worth of damage. Luckily for the club, a good samaritan stepped and donated over £5,000 to repair the covers.
Although the damage this year is slight compared to twelve months ago, it is yet another blow to the club ahead of the first team’s upcoming home match against Llantwit Fardre CC.
In a separate incident, two youths were spotted climbing on the roof of the sports pavilion on the Sportsground last Wednesday (12th May) by groundsman Mr Grey as he sat in his vehicle having some lunch.
He challenged the youths to come down but they refused asking him “What was he going to do about it?”
They threw broken slates at his vehicle and smashed the front window, and then continued to throw slates at him as he backed the vehicle away.
Two supervisors from a local residential school came looking for the boys. Two police officers arrived on the scene and coaxed the boys down who were then taken away by the supervisors.
The Beacon has seen mobile phone footage of the two climbing up the roof and was shown the marks caused by them sliding down the tiles. Damage was caused to the roof of another building adjacent to the pavilion.
Gwent Police confirmed they were called at approximately 1pm that day to reports of two youngsters on a roof of the pavilion on the Sportsground in Monmouth. Both were persuaded down from the roof.
