A CHURCH cross worth around £700 has been severely damaged by vandals.

Gwent Police is appealing for information after criminal damage was caused to the gold metal processional cross at a church in Caerwent.

The incident, which took place between 12pm and 5pm on Friday 13th January, involved the cross being severely damaged and completely bent, while the shaft was broken in half.

It is believed the cost to replace the cross would be between £600 and £700.

The church is normally open to public during the day between 9am and 5pm, however there are fears that the church is considering limiting access after the incident.

Police Community Support Officer Timm Norville said: “This crime will cause a knock on effect for the community if the church decides to restrict access, therefore we are relentlessly working to find who is responsible and bring them to justice.

“If you were in the area at the time and saw anything no matter how small please come forward.”

Anyone who has any information regarding this incident should call 101 quoting log number: 174 16/01/2017.
