Vauxhall Fields has been suggested as an alternative site to Wonastow Road for housing development in Monmouth.

The site would see 300 houses, as well as industrial units and outdoor spaces, be built.

Suggested as an option for Monmouthshire's Local Development Plan (LDP), the site was put before Monmouth town councillors at a planning committee meeting on Monday 12th September.

Vauxhall Fields was deemed suitable by developers as it is situated on a contour of less than 50 metres, was out of key woodland and river valley areas and would not disrupt any key 'view corridors' in the town.

Developers also said information from the Environment Agency showed the site was not a flood risk.

Points in favour of the site included its close proximity to the town, good highway access and 'positive interface with greenspace', plus the fact it is already contained within an existing settlement.

Developers pointed out other options available which were Watery Lane, Rockfield Road West and Priory Farm; the former two were not so favourable as they were located too far away from the town centre and Priory Farm is already infill to an existing plan layout.

Cllr Sue Chivers, who questioned the plans, said she had lived in Monmouth all her life and had seen Vauxhall Fields flooded.
