A 1921 Wales international cap awarded to footballer Moses Russell sold for £550 at an auction yesterday (19th May).
The green cap, featuring an embroidered image of a red dragon and the date 1921, was one of 23 Wales caps won by Mr Russell who lived in Chepstow and worked at the Royal Propellant Factory.
He was 58 when he died in Chepstow on 18th December 1946.
Before the sale, at Graham Budd Auctions in London, Mr Russell's cap had been expected to fetch between £600 and £800.
The cap was snapped up by a mystery bidder for £550.
The auction coincided with the 127th anniversary of Mr Russell's birth in Tredegar on the 20th May 1888.
Moses Russell made three appearances for Wales in 1921: against Scotland at Pittodrie, Aberdeen on 12th February; against England at Ninian Park, Cardiff on 14th March; and against Ireland at Vetch Field, Swansea on 9th April
Mr Russell played for several clubs including Merthyr Town, Southport and Plymouth Argyle.
He helped Merthyr win the South Wales and Monmouthshire FA Cup.
