A DECISION on whether to approve a proposal to build two wind turbines measuring a maximum of 100 metres in height has been deferred by Monmouthshire County Council (MCC). County councillors met yesterday (1st July) where they were minded to approve the plans but needed more information before making a decision. Located on the Gwent Levels between Rogiet and Undy, the wind turbines would be accompanied by acillary works. The turbines in question would have upwind rotors with speeds varying between six and 22.3 revolutions per minute. Ancillary works would include underground cabling to Caldicot pumping station, electrical substation kiosks to be located at the base of each tower and a new access track. The plans had been recommended for refusal prior to the meeting on the basis that the 100 metre turbines in the chosen location is contrary to policy CH14 of the Monmouthshire Unitary Development Plan and would have an adverse impact on the character and appearance of the area. The turbines also go against criteria a) of Policy ENV8 of the Monmouthshire Unitary Development Plan as the turbines would be within 500 metres of residential properties and cause an "unacceptable adverse impact" on its neighbours. Magor with Undy Community Council recommended the plans for approval, showing their support towards projects that encompass renewable energy. Rogiet Community Council also recommended the plans for approval but had some concerns over traffic. They claimed the road is unsuitable for heavy vehicles and expressed concerns about extra traffic on the B4245 between Magor and Rogiet. The Highways Department at MCC said they required more information before supporting the application. To view the full application, visit: http://www.mon">www.mon mouthshire.gov.uk
