What a fantastic end to the season for Usk Ladies Netball Club. They were in second place going into their last match against Habs and the players were nervous all day waiting for the game.
They needn't have worried, those nerves were channelled into adrenalin and they won convincingly 26-11.
Everybody played their hearts out from the start.
As ever Molly GA was flying around the court, passing, catching, turning in the air. She didn't seem to touch the ground at all and despite some very close marking, managed to score goals.
WD and coach Sam's, together with GD Vicky's, interceptions provided many turn over balls and gave a 7-1 lead after the first quarter.
It was a battle of heights on the wing for the next two quarters when Usk's WA Kate was marked by a defender who must have been 18 inches taller than her.
As ever, it didn't faze Kate, she just got on with it and did the job, constantly coming forward and assisted the attack with impeccable positioning around the D.
GS Natallie's fancy footwork and holding space ensured that even the most determined GK would not stop her getting the ball, and then, she makes putting it in the net seem so easy. 16-4 at half-time.
C Danielle's positioning was flawless, always in the right place around the D to get the ball to the shooters and then always at the top of the D at the other end of the court to collect any rebound gained from Emma's goal keeping skills. A 21-7 lead after the third and victory was in sight.
Only in the last quarter did the team ease up a bit, or were they exhausted by then? The subs Sarah and Bronwen weren't needed for this game, but they, along with Soph and Katie, all played their part in previous games.
When the final whistle went, the supporters – past players, club members, family and friends – celebrated wildly.
This club has never won the league before, far from it in fact. It is testament to both the dedication of the coach Sam, finding new drills and making training sessions worthwhile, and everyone who comes and trains week in, week out.
There are many club events left to enjoy this year, now the serious games are finished – friendly games, rounders, 'bring a plate' night and the annual tour.
The club welcomes new players of any standard and any age at their training sessions which will continue on Thursdays 6pm to 8pm, outdoors on the Tennis Courts at Usk Athletic Club. Finally, well done girls, enjoy the afterglow and the high.
