Not many games were played across all the divisions in the Welsh League on Saturday so the groundstaff and volunteers that worked hard on the Undy pitch in the morning to get the game on deserve a great deal of credit .
Unfortunately conditions deteriorated from noon onwards and the pitch was very wet and boggy at kick off time and got worse as the game went on.
It was Croesyceiliog who started brightly and a free kick after only two minutes was superbly saved down low by James Smallcombe. The visitors were adapting to the conditions far more quickly than Undy and on 17 minutes, a cross from out wide from Watkins eluded everyone and found Dave Powell at the back post who tapped in the first goal for the visitors.
The game was not a great spectacle as the pitch was cut up but Matthew Pymm in the Croesyceiliog midfield showed all his experience by just breaking things up and getting the ball forward quickly causing the Undy defence to keep turning.
Jones and Barnes worked hard up front but were unable to cause problems in the penalty box; that was left to Gyles Thompson who made a great run and was picked out with a free sight at goal in the box but he screwed his shot well wide from 12 yards out.
With the half-time score of 0-1, manager Mark Crook changed formation and made two subs as Undy chased the game, Larcombe and Power came on for Stevens and Binning. Power made an immediate impact on his debut as he worked neatly with Jones on 48 minutes out wide and beat his man, picking out Barnes unmarked on the back post who had the easy task of levelling matters.
It was backs against the wall stuff now for Croesyceiliog but their defence, marshalled by experienced centre half Dewar, stood firm. Roberts had a chance from a corner but he could not control his shot as the ball bounced up at him. Against the run of play on 76 minutes a long ball down the Undy left channel was controlled by Arnold and he expertly struck his shot across Smallcombe and into the bottom corner for 2-1.
Despite 15 minutes of pressure from Undy there was no breaking Croesyceiliog down but with the clock on 93 minutes James Barnes was put through and with only the keeper to beat he unfortunately shot straight at his legs and the game was lost.
A draw would maybe have been a fair result but credit to Croesyceiliog for taking the spoils that day.
