Monmouth Comprehensive School athlete Florence James was successful last weekend (29th and 30th June) in the Welsh Athletics Championship sprint races in Cardiff Stadium.

Florence, from Trellech, represented Newport Harriers in both the 100 metres and 200 metre races and won medals in both.

She has only been training since January this year, and is trained by Ryan Lee's former coach Dave Norton, who has helped her to success.

On Saturday, Florence secured third after two very competitive races, and was elated to win a Bronze at her first outdoor National Championships.

Sunday was equally as tough with competitors from across Wales lining up in the heats and final.

Florence secured her final place with a strong run in the heats, and in the final ran a personal best of 26.86 seconds to take the silver medal.

Dave said after the race: "Florence has worked very hard to attain this level of achievement in such a short period of time."
