THERE were sunny spells during last Monday afternoon's meeting at Chepstow Racecourse (22nd June), where the going was on the fast side of good.

The meeting proved particularly successful for trainer Andrew Balding, who took a treble, while there were doubles for jockeys David Probert and Franny Norton.

Second here a few weeks ago, John Gosden's filly Mill Springs (2/1) put that experience to good use by making all the running in the first, a 1 mile 4 furlong maiden.

Robert Havlin rousted her along approaching two out and she responded readily to go four lengths clear of Paddy's Runner.

Andrew Balding has trained Dandy (11/2) to win at Chepstow in the last two Junes and a third such triumph came his way today in the 1m2f handicap.

Cathy Gannon led all the way on him, stepping up the pace on the bend into the home straight and again when their rivals got close two out.

He extended his advantage at the post to three lengths, Prim And Proper finishing best of the rest.

Farletti (9/4 joint favourite), another for Andrew Balding, won the next over a mile. David Probert kept her just behind the leaders before being asked to go on two out.

She went three lengths clear and held that advantage without much trouble all the way to the line. The other joint favourite, Elle Shade, kept on at one pace to fill the runner-up berth.

The outsider of three won the maiden fillies' race, also over a mile. Again it was a case of "made all", as Franny Norton jumped Teosroyal (9/2) into the lead at the outset, and though Carnachy began a challenge over a quarter of a mile out it soon became apparent that the leader was going best.

This length and three quarters winner was a rare Chepstow raider from the yard of veteran Newmarket trainer Clive Brittain.

Guiding Light (7/4 fav) completed a treble for Andrew Balding and a double for David Probert when scrambling home in the fifth race.

He needed almost every yard of the seven furlongs to overhaul the leader from two out, Orlando Rogue, and was a head in front as they passed the winning post.

The Ed McMahon-trained Gold Club (9/2) scored for the third time this year in the 6f handicap.

Held up in midfield initially, Martin Lane's urgings from two out did not provoke an immediate response. However, when sufficiently revved up he ran on through the centre of the field to lead with a hundred yards to go. The consistent Bonjour Steve finished half a length away in second.

The card closed with a 5f handicap and yet another all-the-way winner. Gower Princess (20/1) recaptured her decent form from two years ago for local trainer Ron Harris. Chester Deelyte came to challenge on the far side two out, but Franny Norton kept the leader going well and she had half a length to spare at the line.
