Ioan Edwards, from Wye Gymnastics Club in Caldicot, tumbled his way to take the gold medal in the British Tumbling NDP finals that were held in Telford last weekend. Four gymnasts from the club qualified for the finals after competing in three preliminary events. Izzie Harris, Dylan Duffield, Mason Riddoch and Ioan all came first at their level in the Welsh Championship event back in February. Since then, they have all competed in qualifying events in both Sheffield and Coventry where they secured top eight positions and made it through to the final. Unfortunately, Izzie sustained a knee injury before finals which put her out of the competition and she had to cheer her teammates on from home as she recovers. The three boys travelled to the International Conference Centre in Telford where Dylan, who was competing at Level 4 Age 11/12, performed well in the finals, finishing in seventh place overall. Mason competed at Level 5 Age 10/12 against some fantastic gymnasts and finished his event in sixth place. Ioan was the last to compete in the Level 5 Age 15+ Category. At only 14 years old, he was one of the youngest in his age group, competing against gymnasts much older than him. He performed his three runs flawlessly however, fighting off all the competition to earn himself the gold medal and the NDP Championship Title. Coaches Carly Hawke and Leanne Evans were ecstatic with the result. "The gymnasts have worked so hard to get to where they are and we are so proud that they made it through to finals," they said. "Ioan has been trying to juggle his training along with sitting his GCSEs so this win makes all the hard work worthwhile."
