MONMOUTH Cricket Club kept up their promotion push with a 10-wicket demolition of lowly Llantwit Fardre in the Thomas, Carroll Glamorgan and Monmouthshire League Division Three. Chasing 177 runs to win from 33 overs in a rain-affected match, Monmouth's opening batsmen Josh Grey (87 not out) and Matt Jones (70 not out) swept the hosts to the target with 29 balls to spare on an excellent pitch at the Sports Ground. Grey and Jones' running between the wickets was exceptional and they immediately had the hosts on the front foot against a spirited Llantwit side, who are just one place off the bottom. The crushing win was the sixth in succession for Ben Turner's in-form Monmouth side and their second league double of the campaign. Monmouth remain third in the table after second-placed Dinas Powys edged a low-scoring thriller against Cardiff Gymkhana and table-topping Lisvane were beaten by Ponthir. Monmouth, sponsored by JD Wetherspoon, have six league matches remaining and travel to third-bottom Cardiff Gymkhana in a vital match this Saturday. Llantwit Fardre belied their league position last Saturday on an afternoon which was blighted by rain storms that caused several lengthy stoppages in play. In fact, it was a great effort to get the outfield and square fit for action after thunderstorms in the early hours of the morning had threatened to wash out the fixture. Opener L Benjamin batted sensibly for 84, while Chris Lloyd made 40 and N Sariya 38 as the visitors eventually posted a respectable 218-5 from 50 overs. Neil Smith, once again, gave little away, conceding just 25 runs in a miserly 10-over spell, while Alim Hansraj took 1-28 from 10 and Owen Parris 1-42 from 10. Jonathan Jones bagged 1-46, including a caught and bowled chance, while Matt Lovett held a catch and engineered a run-out. A sharp piece of fielding from Tej Saran also led to a run-out. Due to the breaks in play due to rain, Monmouth's innings was reduced by 17 overs and the target was revised in line with the rules of the league. Grey's outstanding unbeaten 87 contained 12 fours and a six and came from just 92 balls as he showed his class to rip apart the visiting attack. And Grey was well supported by Jones, whose 70 not out included seven fours and came from 87 deliveries. The visitors used seven bowlers in total but it could not halt Monmouth's barrage of runs and the hosts eventually reached the target in 28.1 overs. • Monmouth's 2nd team will be hosting Cardiff Gymkhana 2nd at the Sports Ground this Saturday after last weekend's trip to Llantwit Fardre 2nd was washed out.
