SUDBROOK slumped as Croesyceiliog cruised at Mill Lane on Saturday with the visitors proving to be “Miles better”
Croesyceiliog’s all-rounder Conor Miles contributed in all three disciplines, holding three catches in the field, taking two wickets and scoring a fine 53 to help his team to victory after Sudbrook took two early wickets.
The visitors won the toss and asked Sudbrook to bat first, a decision that looked a good one when opener Micky Martin (5) was caught.
At the other end, skipper Ross Lewis swapped a helmet for the club cap, normally the sign for him to let loose and punish the opposition’s spin bowlers.
Partnered by Mathew Kinchin, the pair put on 58 for the second wicket before Miles made his first major contribution, holding a catch to dismiss Kinchin off the bowling of Ieuan Wakefield for 41.
But 87-2 became 87-3 as Wakefield snapped up his second wicket and then Miles and Wakefield combined again to dismiss Lewis with the score on 90-4.
Miles made the next breakthrough almost immediately, trapping Kel Stevens leg before wicket.
James Kinchin added 21 before becoming Miles’ second LBW victim and Miles took his third catch to make Wakefield (4-30) Croesyceiliog’s top bowler.
Only Rhys Pescod (10) offered any resistance as Sudbrook were all out for 149 with slightly more than seven overs remaining.
With Sudbrook missing first team regulars Lewis Morgan, Rob Thorne and Martin Norton, skipper Lewis admitted his team put on a poor performance.
“It was a bitterly disappointing effort with us being poor in all three disciplines,” he said.
“We gave far too many of our wickets away when we batted on a good wicket and with the ball, we were undisciplined and bowled far too many four-balls.
“There isn’t a lot more I can say about that. The only positive to come from it was young James Kinchin who made 21 on his debut for us and we will welcome back Lewis and Martin next week.”
Sudbrook’s reply was given an early boost as Rob Simmonds, in for Thorne, bowled opener Alex Barry for 10 and then trapped Alex Kryjom leg before without troubling the scorer.
Jonathan Lewis removed the other opener Thomas Kear thanks to Mathew Kinchin’s catch but that brought Miles to the crease.
Along with his partner, skipper Stewart Roden (50), Miles hit eight boundaries and a maximum to wrap it all up, reaching 150-3 in the 24th over.
