The heavy rains of late caused problems for the entire field competing for the Steve Biggs Memorial trophy at the Rolls of Monmouth Golf Club on Sunday 22nd July.
Despite glorious sunshine on the day, the course was playing extra long due to the soft ground conditions and not one competitor could break par.
The promising young six handicap golfer, Jeff Hall, swept into an early lead with a birdie at the opening hole but by the sixth hole the promise had proved hollow as he disappeared from the leader board, eventually finishing in last place.
Another of the club's top golfers, Dave Lyons, playing off a handicap of three, slumped to a 14 over par 86.
When asked how he managed such a score he commented that it was due to excellent putting on the day.
Local specialist dental surgeon, Dave Guppy, could not extract himself from the fringes of the course in which he found himself and limped home with a score that any opening batsman would have been proud of.
Men's captain Dick Bull had a particularly flaky round, finishing with an ice-cream score of 99 gross.
New member, Rudge Bowen, who has recently returned to the Wye Valley, took the first prize by one shot from Luke James, with Alex Badram and Richard Gable a further one shot back in third and fourth places.
Rudge said he was delighted to be so readily accepted and welcomed as a member of The Rolls, which he considers to be the finest golf course in the area.
